BACKGROUND
This portrait is a fine example of the Newlyn Schools response to French Realism. Influenced by the most important artist of the day the French painter Courbet.
F W Baker is a highly skilled and sensitive painter and this beautiful depiction of an everyday Cornish girl painted in a realistic and accomplished manner is a fine example. The French painter Gustave Courbet was the leading figure of the Realist movement, known for rejecting the established conventions of academic painting and focusing on depicting everyday life and the working class with a powerful, realistic style.
