An exceptional quality Burmese Buddha sculpture hand-carved from alabaster. This piece, likely from the early 19th century or earlier, reflects the artistry of the Mandalay Period, named after the city of Mandalay which served as Myanmar’s capital from 1860-1885 during King Mindon’s reign.
Despite the fall of this kingdom in 1886, the Royal Guilds continued to create sculptures in the Mandalay style. This marble Buddha, known for its translucency, exudes calm through its delicate carved details and a slight smile, symbolizing Buddha Gautama’s victory over the devil Mara.
